About GIA

I devoted this post to the Gemological Institute of America, you know as GIA. They did a lot for diamond and gemstone grading and work lot in laboratories. You can visit their website on www.gia.edu

Gemological Institute of America was founded in 1931, today headquartered in Carlsbad, California, U. S. Exactly, GIA is a nonprofit institute and they deal with education, research and gemstone grading. It’s important to GIA that all the buyers know the fact about gemstones. They protect buyers and sellers, too.

The gemstone which was graded by GIA only the trustworthy stone. GIA is nobody’s. No influence, no corruption, no lies. So you can trust them.

GIA developed the International Diamond Grading System and instituited the usage of the 4 Cs as standard in diamond grading. The 4 Cs are carat weight, clarity, cut and color.

Nowadays GIA has twelve campuses, seven laboratories, four research centers and they are operates out of fourteen countries worldwide.

Diamond Artificial Simulants

Diamond has been imitated for more hundred years ago. The technology is more better than some years ago that’s why artificial diamonds are more better day by day. To create a simulant, you need the newest technologies such as varistors, active laser mediums, and bubble memory. Of corse there are some people who want to scam consumers but there are some customers who want buy these “near to diamond” stones. Here are the best simulants nowadays:

High-leaded glasses

The most popular glasses are rhinestones.Rhinestones also known as diamantes and they made from glass, rock crystal and acrylac. In the sun, they have real diamond effect. The reason why they name is rhinestone is the stones originally gathered from river Rhine. The famous Swarowski use these crystal stones. Glass simulants are shining and nice. To collect more info, read more here.

Moissanites

Moissanites are created in laboratory they chemical formula is SiC. They density is less than diamonds so a 1 carat moissanite is bigger than a 1 carat diamond. They hardness are very near to a diamond’s hardness, on the Mohs’ scale 8,5-9,25 while diamond’s is 10. Their sparkling are better than diamonds’ sparkling. This is a popular stone and people love they in jewelry. My source.

Cubic Zirconia

For shorter CZ. This stones are from zirconium dioxide (ZrO2). This is also a hard material, 8.3 on the Mohs scale. Their density are more bigger than that diamonds’. The production began in 1976. Nowadays people love moissanite better than cubic zirconia. There are in several colors like yellow, orange, pink, red, green, purple. Of corse the most popular is the colorless CZ.

White Sapphires

The most popular and valuable color is the blue but there is white sapphire, too. White sapphires often used in jewellery becouse their halo effect. Nowadays white sapphires not used for diamond simulant. For more, visit my number one source!

The 4Cs

Diamonds are very valuable and expensive. This is why so important grading them. The grading system of diamonds founded in the 1940’s when GIA established the 4 Cs with International Diamond Grading System. Now this is the official standard worldwide.

In the 4 Cs, “Cs” means

  • Cut
  • Clarity
  • Color
  • Carat weight

Let’s see them!

Cut - The diamonds’ brilliance, fire and sparkle depends on the diamond’s cut. Classified of the cut there are two classes:

  • round brilliant cut
  • fancy cuts

The most popular cut is the round brilliant. Diamonds are consist of tables and facets. Tables are parallel with the ground and this is the bigger part of the diamond while facets are smaller.

Diamonds have an upper part, a girlde and a lower part. The girdle is in the medium, the lower part is in the setting and the upper part is that we see.

Different shapes catched various cuts. For example round shape based on brilliant cut, princess shape based on modified brilliant cut (fancy cut), trilliant cut based on step cut (fancy cut) and so on.

Clarity - Diamonds formed under extreme pressure and heat, this is why they contain internal and external birthmarks. Internal birthmarks named inclusions and external birthmarks are blemishes.

GIA’s Clarity Scale has 11 grades:

-FL - flawless, there are no inclusions and blemishes under 10X magnification

-IF - internally flawless, no inclusions, only blemishes are visible under 10X magnification

-VVS1 and VVS2 - very, very slightly included, hard to see the inclusions under 10X magnification

-VS1 and VS2 - very slightly included, inclusions are minor

-SI1 and SI2 - slightly included, inclusions are noticeable under 10X magnification

-I1, I2 and I3 - included, inclusions are obvious under 10X magnification

Color - Rule: colorless is better. The color grading scale from D to Z. D is the best and colorless, and Z is the worst and light. Sections are:

-D-F - colorless

-G-J - near colorless

-K-M - faint

-N-R - very light

-S-Z - light

Carat weight - Diamonds’ and gemstones’ weight metric is the carat or ct. 1 carat = 0,2 g.

ATTENTION: Don’t confuse diamond’s carat with precious metals’ carat which refers to purity.

This is diamonds grading system by GIA. I hope it was useful.

Bye!
